He is best remembered for his science fiction novels, and is considered a founding father of the genre. Herbert George Wells’s (1866-1946) career as an author was fostered by a childhood mishap. He broke his leg and spent his convalescence reading every book he could find. Wells earned a scholarship at the Norman School of Science in London. Wells’s “science fiction” (although he never called it such) was influenced by his interest in biology. H. G. Wells gained fame with his first novel, The Time Machine (1895). He followed this with The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War Of The Worlds (1898).

Tom Kidd is a widely known fantasy illustrator. He has received four Hugo nominations and has won four Chesley Awards and the Anlab Award. His work has appeared on the covers of well over two hundred books and magazines, and a number of museums have displayed his artwork. He has designed robots and created architectural designs for a theme park, and he is currently hard at work on a large-scale book about airships. Tom Kidd lives in New Milford, Connecticut.

He is also the editor of the Books of Wonder Classics, a series of deluxe facsimiles and newly illustrated editions of timeless tales. And he is the author of The Wizard Next Door, illustrated by Steven Kellogg. Mr. Glassman lives in New York City.
