Biography
Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) is one of the world’s great writers. Born Virginia Stephen, she became a professional writer in 1900, and began writing for the TLS a few years later. In 1912, she married Leonard Woolf; they founded the Hogarth Press five years later. Her novels include Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and The Waves (1931), but she is also celebrated as the author of short stories and non-fiction, including the feminist essays A Room of One’s Own (1929) and Three Guineas (1938).

Born in London as Adeline Virginia Stephen, Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) was a distinguished novelist, essayist, and critic; cofounder of the Hogarth Press with her husband, Leonard Woolf; and a central figure of the famed Bloomsbury group. Celebrated for her modernist sensibility and stylistic innovations,Woolf is best remembered for the novels Mrs. Dalloway (1925) and To the Lighthouse (1927), and the feminist classic A Room of One’s Own (1929).

Maria Cairney currently teaches in a sixth form college in Manchester. She is an experienced A Level English Literature and English Language teacher and examiner with a PhD in Victorian literature and a special interest in 19th century serialised fiction by writers such as Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle. Before becoming a teacher, Maria was also, for many years, a magazine journalist and editor.
